Cloud migration & data platform with Azure Databricks
Cloud-native architecture for near-real-time data, self-service BI & scalability
A global logistics company was faced with the challenge of modernizing its outdated on-premises data infrastructure. The goal was to migrate an on-premise data warehouse to a scalable cloud data platform that consolidates data from file shares, SFTP servers, SAP HANA, Teradata, PostgreSQL, Salesforce and APIs - including near-real-time availability for operational decisions. Together with ruhrdot, a cloud-native architecture was created on Azure Databricks that combines self-service BI, automated ETL processes and central governance in one platform.

Outdated systems prevented data-driven scaling
The existing infrastructure was no longer able to meet performance, data availability, and governance requirements.
- Limited scalability and computing on an on-prem MSSQL server
- Distributed source systems (SAP HANA, Salesforce, Teradata, PostgreSQL, file shares, SFTP) with different formats and protocols
- No consistent database for strategic management and analytics
- Lack of real-time capability for operational decisions in business units
- No access to self-service BI tools for business areas
- No standardized governance model for data sharing and access control

Scalable data strategy for all business units
The new platform provides noticeable improvements in efficiency and decision-making capacity.
- Central consolidation of all data sources and business units on one platform
- Near-real-time access to decision-relevant data
- Self-service BI enables well-founded operational and strategic analyses
- Platform is ready for future growth and new requirements
- Automation reduces manual effort and saves resources
- Governance & compliance through Databricks Unity Catalog
